Yo también quiero ser Ministro o Presidente.

Se va el año y como regalo del año viejo vemos que este gobierno ha cambiado su gabinete una vez más. Parecería que más allá de la caricaturesca insistencia en la asamblea constitucional, constituyente, fundacional o como se le quiere llamar, la única otra característica de este gobierno es el ánimo compulsivo por cambiar de gabinete y funcionarios públicos ante los gritos de la prensa, los derechos humanos, y cualesquiera otra ONG que diga representar a la sociedad civil. A pesar de tanto cambio y tanto discurso vemos que las cosas no cambian en el país. La estructura legal y estatal del país sigue siendo la misma invariablemente.

La semana pasada comenté (El Petroleo de los Huaroni) sobre cual creía que podría ser la solución al problema del Petroleo que planteaban los Huaroni. El día lunes de la semana pasada fui invitado a una conferencia donde estuvieron presentes líderes indígenas de la comunidad Saraguro de Ecuador. La propuesta que estaban promocionando en Washington es muy interesante, pues plantea una solución a un problema en apariencia difícil de resolver.

El petroleo de los Huaroni

Vemos en estos días los indígenas Huaroni reclamando la presencia de empresas petroleras de Brasil en sus tierras ancestrales. Vemos esta pobre gente vivir aún en la edad de piedra con sus costumbres milenarias y muchos ciudadanos comunes se preguntan que tanto se quejan. Por otro lado los llamados activistas sociales reclaman la presencia y la devastación que sufren estos pueblos autóctonos con el avance de la civilización y la explotación petrolera.

London bombing

What a pitty what has happened in London I join my voice to the blogsphere condemming this horrendous attack. I woke up late today, and my first thought was should I use the Metro today or call in sick. I guess chances of having simultenous attacks in different cities is still low. Hopefully we should never see that day.

La seguridad social estatal y los fondos de reserva

Es evidente en las últimas manifestaciones callejeras de los trabajadores que la gente prefiere obtener algo ahora de los fondos de reserva que esperar quien sabe cuantos años para usarlos. Por supuesto no es algo que ocurre porque la gente no piensa en su futuro. Es algo que se da fruto de la desconfianza del ciudadano común en lo que el seguro social está haciendo con su dinero. Gran escándalo ha causado en la ciudadanía el saber que los fondos de reserva están acumulados en el Banco Central ganando intereses irrisorios. Menos mal son dólares y no sucres pues en estos momentos no serían 580 millones de dólares como dice el gobierno si no quien sabe si 10 dólares al paso al que ibamos en el 2001.

Only the second winners of this prize for musical achievement and it's a proof of the ever increasing influence of Latinos. Cheers to Latino's and America, as Emilio Estefan said, "this country is about dreams". A country full of all this dreams that people achieve here despite the meager conditions in which they arrive and live for a while. Long live to this republic.

Happy Birthday America

I am watching on tv the concert at the mall celebrating the 4th of July. The best part so far is the Star Wars insignia musical theme played on the national mall by the National Symphony Orchestra led by conductor Erich Kunzel. Just watching it on tv with the backdrop of the Mall gave me goose bumps. Makes you think about the greatness of this country, that is the good part. On the other hand hopefully this country remains a republic and does not become an empire or a dictatorship as it happens in the movie. Any similarity with reality is sheer coincidence.

En días recientes se ha venido cuestionando si hay o no hay influencia de personas afines a la revolución bolivariana del Presidente Chavez en el gobierno y en las Ong's del país. Mas allá de los vínculos, dificiles de probar pero facilmente visibles, existe preocupación de parte de algunas personas de ciertos hechos que vienen dándose en el país.

Aniversario #3

Bueno el 29 de diciembre del 2004 cumplimos 3 años de casados. Tomamos unas fotos y la camara que era desechable se confundió entre algunas cosas y no la volvimos a ver hasta despues de unos meses. Luego por una u otra cosa no se reveló la camara y casi 6 meses mas tarde las mandé a revelar. Fue una noche muy feliz, y aunque hubo poca celebración debido a nuestras escuálidas finanzas, si hubo mucho cariño. Aquí las fotos de aquella ocasión. Olguita hizo una torta de chocolate, Pio Joaquín para variar no se dejaba tomar una foto de los tres juntos y luego Carol que bajo a lavar su ropa nos tomó unas fotitos juntos. Aunque no es el aniversario #3 o el #4, aprovecho para desearle un feliz aniversario a la gordita que en estos días está por el Guayas. :-( A ella dedico este poemita que he descubierto leyendo el poemario de Silva:

Maniqueísmo público

En estos días se ha dado por hablar de los morosos de la banca y ahora resulta que tener deudas es pecado. Han convertido a la central de riesgos en un instrumento para realizar vendettas políticas. Leyendo el diario - Expreso encontré un editorial que no puede ser más atinado sobre este tema que en estos días se discute en el país. El editorial "Maniqueísmo público" de Paul Velasco Ruiz lo reproduzco verbatim a continuación con el perdón del autor pero me parece que es de suma importancia en estos días:

Se va con algo mio

Estoy contento pues hoy despues de muchos años recordé un poema muy querido. Nunca me he considerado muy dotado en la sensibilidad poética, pero cuando tenía 7 años (78-79 que lejos suena), tenía que llevar a clases una demostración de mis talentos. Nervioso no sabía que hacer y mi papá me hizo memorizar un poema. Como no me lo aprendía me acosté frustrado. A las 5 de la mañana me levantó y me lo aprendí. Desde ese día aprendí 2 cosas. La primera que podía hablar en público, aunque tardaría algunos años mas en darme cuenta que lo podía hacer bien y la segunda a estudiar a esa hora. Durante mucho tiempo en la universidad cuando ya no podía mas prefería acostarme temprano y levantarme a las 5 a estudiar. El poema es del afamado Medardo Angel Silva y lo reproduzco a continuación:

Se va con algo mio la tarde que se aleja...

Mi dolor de vivir es un dolor de amar

y, al son de la garúa, en la antigua calleja

Lo mas increible es que recordé las dos primeras líneas y como hace unos meses mi papá me regaló un libro con toda la poesía de Silva lo pude buscar a partir de lo que me acordaba. Mas extraño aún es que resulta muy apropiado para los tiempos que vivo. Y que alegría me acordarme de estas memorias de mi infancia.

Life as a Hermit

I thought hermits were early Christian phenomena. It seems that there is a revival movement from what I read in this Newsweek article. Although as a catholic I respect the church different approaches to faith, and that I enjoy being alone, I think this is a little bit extreme. You can find everything in the lord's vineyard.

Milton Friedman did it again

Two in a row. This is another article this time an op-ed by Milton Friedman at the WSJ about the idea of Vouchers. Another practical idea in order to have less government in the education area. Once again according to Friedman an old proposal dating back to an article in 1955 on "The Role of Government in Education". Another good idea that has taken root in countries far down south like Chile.

Please give a visa to this guys

This is not the first time that I have seen this, but this is the first time that I am going to propose this. Regardless of where cubans are found at the sea or on the Florida beaches, the BCIS should give permanent residency to this guys that are entepreneurial and creative in their ways to modify things to be able to escape the socialist "paradise" Cuba. Can you imagine how much the USA benefits by accepting this guys into this country, a society that is perfectly characterized by its enteprenurial drive and rewards to creative people?

Milton Friedman recollections on Social Security Reform

This is an interesting piece published on the SFGate regarding Milton Friedman's recollections about the begginning of a movement for Social security reform. He talked about the proposition to abolish Social Security first in 1962, with the publication of "Capitalism and Freedom", not because it was not efficient but because it was inmoral, a huge Ponzi scheeme run by the government. What I found fascinating and is not mentioned on the interview was that I always wondered how the chileans (Piñera among others) came up with the idea of changing their Social security system and to turn it into a privately funded one. Tweenty years later it has been so succesful that it has become the example for reform in the developed world. In spanish we say nobody is a prophet in their own land and I think this perfectly applies to Milton Friedman. Only if he had been heard in the USA 20 years ago like the Chileans did, how different things would be. (thanks to Marginal Revolution)

Another fallen government in Bolivia?

I think is a matter of time before Bolivia breaks up or becomes another story of a failed democracy. Spanish newspaper el Mundo is telling that Mesa has abandoned the presidential palace. Lets see what happens next. At least in my native country Ecuador means a new government. The problems that Bolivia faces are not easy to resolve. Bolivia has reached a tipping point and anything can happen. Also check this link from an Op-ed of Oscar Ortiz of Compromiso Ciudadano.

El Salvador in the Road to prosperity

Juan José Daboub former economics minister of El Salvador in this interview by Libertad y Desarrollo offers his opinion on how El Salvador in the last 15 years has positioned itself on the Index of Economic Freedom position #24. Among the sucesses achieved Daboub claims that poverty has been reduced 20%, mortality rates have gone from 47 per thousand to 25 per thousand and iliteracy have fallen from 33% in 1992 to 13% in 2004. He also outlines the work of America Libre Institute, directed by former Salvadorean President Francisco Flores.

Where would you live

Living in the Washington area I am always worried about being able to buy a home in this are. With soaring prices and yearly increases in the prices of 50 and 60% I have been looking for places outside the beltway. This WSJ graphics shows a spillover effect, sleepy cities increasingly becoming the alternative option for people that cannot afford the hefty prices. In my case I don't know if I am willing to move to Baltimore (I work in Arlington). On the TV I have seen this days ads promoting Stafford and Fredericksburg counties as good places to live south of the Capital Beltway. In any case if I decide to do something like this I will have to live close to a train and work in DC to consider it. In the meantime I will have to continue living and overpaying here.

VR Pacman

Check this out. The link is an interesting one, Pac Man as virtual reality game. Seems an interesting concept. I wonder how long before you start seeing people on the streets running or chasing somebody with goggles on they head.

Insight into the Podcasting

It seems that PodCasting is becoming mainstream. Podcasting according to Wikipedia:


"Podcasting is a method of publishing sound files to the Internet, allowing users to subscribe to a feed and receive new audio files automatically"


Curious about it for some time while browsing the blogs I read, I got to a post that mentioned the Podcasting Blog of Slashdot Review. The 10 minute show runs daily and features tech news and comments. To close the podcast they feature alternative music bands. This bands are usually new groups or independant groups and they use this shows plus their own podcasts to promote themselves. On Thursday June 2 show I discovered this Roanake Virginia band "Barefoot West" that has this cool music with a catchy tune and soft lyrics. "You are You are" song is perfect to be in the caribean or at the beach having a few beers. I have added in my list of links a category for Podcasting. As I discover interesting podcast I wil add them to that category, watch my links. Join the podcasting revolution and start by listening. Now I need someone to give me an IPod to do real Podcast listening.

Tratado de Libre Comercio

Aquí hay un enlace interesante sobre el avance de las negociaciones sobre el Libre Comercio en con la comunidad Andina de naciones. Este sitio nos dá la perpectiva de la oficina del representante de comercio de los Estados Unidos (The Office of the U.S. Trade Representative (USTR)). Yo creo que el tratado es algo que puede ayudar al país muchísimo, aunque por otro lado espero que no se vuelva en la escusa para no hacer reformas de cambio más profundas e incluso para abrir unilateralmente el comercio internacional en el Ecuador. Este otro enlace en cambio es el sitio oficial de la oficina encargada de llevar las negociaciones en el Ecuador.

CAFTA DR Progress

Here is an interesting link if you want to know what is going on with the Central American Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA) from the perspective of The Office of the U.S. Trade Representative (USTR). I encourage you to follow the CAFTA-DR debate as US Congress prepares to vote on the agreement. Some say that securing passage of this accord is a priority for President Bush, and it will set the stage for further achievements in advancing political and economic freedom in the Western Hemisphere. I just hope that it works and it does not becomes a straight jacket for liberalizing further the Central American countries, or an excuse to avoid doing more profound reforms in the trade aspects and other aspects.

Richard Posner Chief Justice?

I am probably navigating rough waters with this comment, especially being new to this country and to judicial issues, but certanly this comment by PrawfsBlawg does an interesting analysis of why Richard Posner would make a good case for a Supreme Court Chief Justice. Being my inclinations on the libertarian side I admire a lot of Posner and Becker's blog and I often hear them being quoted in free market - Libertarian -Conservative lectures. Would not be great to have a Supreme Court Justice like him? Thanks for the pointer to Instapundit

Blogging as a Job

This little article that appeared on the WSJ yesterday is interesting. It tells how blogging is becoming a respectable profession and as companies recognize the value of blogs for their corporate image they start hiring bloggers to do the company blog. Altough the article says that the leash is relatively long for Bloggers I wonder how long would that last as it becomes a main stream trend.

Deepthroat

Ever since I came to this country I have always been amazed by the Watergate scandal and how a newspaper literally brought down the Nixon government. What made me even more curious was the unknown identity of the so called Deepthroat that was the whistle blower. The infamous name used in a 1970's porn movie became part of popular lexicom thanks to this scandal (or it was the other way around). Anyway I always wondered when his identity would be revealed and it seems that this has been already revealed in this article by Vanity Fair. Not that I read Vanity fair, but thanks to Talk of the left Who I don't necessarily agree but I find interesting to check in order to understand what the other side is debating and thinking.

Mala calidad en las telecomunicaciones

Hace unos días se discute en la blogosfera ecuatoriana sobre el pésimo servicio que brindan las proveedoras de Internet. Bloqueo de puertos o de página enteras por cuestiones "técnicas" parece que son pan de todos los días. La discusión la empezó Ira Vehementi en su post sobre la conversación un funcionario de Satnet y se ha hecho eco con otros blogs como el de Eduardo Arcos que propone llamar a protestar, buscar una solución y cambiarse de empresa.

En estos días se prepara la marcha blanca organizada por el alcalde de Guayaquil. La marcha, que surge producto del conflicto político con el Ingeniero Coronel y su ministro de gobierno, toma más cuerpo conforme se acerca la hora. Los dolores de parto de un nuevo Ecuador han empezado.
